When I first met the amazing Vicky Welgraven AM, it was at a domestic violence awareness event which was featuring some of our dear friends Jess Hill and Rosie Batty. Vicky’s warm and engaging personality was an example of why she is impacting women and men in such a positive way….helping transform lives.
In this episode of TransformingNOWTogether – The Podast – Vicky shares her personal story and the steps that lead her to the career success she has had, and continues to do, in so many areas of society.
Vicky is a proud Adnyamathanha Woman from the Northern Flinders Ranges SA and has built an outstanding career as an advocate and champion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, ensuring their interests are represented and their voices are heard.
On January 2022, Vicky was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her ‘Significant Service to Women through Social Welfare Organisations and Indigenous Health’. Among her many accomplishments and achievements, she serves as a Board Director and Deputy Co-Chair on the Our Watch Board where she promotes gender equality and respectful relationships, and advocates for an end to Family and Domestic Violence.
It’s no secret that I love AFL football and it’s one of the many things Vicky and I share! Vicky has always been a a passionate supporter of the Port Adelaide Football Club is currently a Board Director and Deputy Chair on the Power Community Limited board, the football club’s community arm. She was also a former committee member of Port Adelaide’s AFLW steering committee, when the club joined the AFLW competition.
In 2018 Vicky was awarded the ‘Flame of Change Unifying Support Award’ for her Outstanding advocacy and activism and raising awareness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women. This award was presented to her by her inspiring friend ‘Rosie Batty’.
Vicky was inducted into the South Australian Women’s Honour Roll (2015); Represented the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, in New York (2016); and is a Hutt St Centre Ambassador in South Australia which Vicky enjoys serving meals to the homeless to help rebuild their lives on their journey.
